MORE ABOUT MAINLANDERS

A dysfunctional family moves from Sydney to Hobart. Despite their best efforts, they find themselves wholly unsuitable for regional life as they struggle to adapt to everything Tasmanian.

When high hopes collide with crushing realities

COVID saw a mass exodus from the cities to the regions and we wanted to check in to see how everyone is doing.

In Mainlanders we wanted to examine whether a change in location really changes you? It’s easy to think a sea or a tree change is going to solve all your problems but often, your issues not only follow you, but multiply in your new location. This is the case for the Callaways with their move from the mainland to Hobart.

The Callaway family had such high hopes for their move to Tasmania. However, the family is finding regional life continually falling short of their high expectations. Meanwhile, their neighbours, the Browns attempt to help the mainlanders navigate the social mores of Tasmanian life, with some hilarious consequences.

Mainlanders often have an idealised perception of life in Tasmania and audiences are frequently shown a romanticised depiction of regional life on our screens. This mockumentary-style comedy is purposely set in a large regional city and offers a no holds barred representation of life in the regions.
